Belfast, like many other cities, is located by a river that has played an important role in shaping its history and character. This workshop will explore aspects of the story of the lower reaches of the Lagan, the canal, nearby communities, industries and public open spaces. This story cannot ignore how badly polluted the river became, and how, with the decline of riverside industries and closure of the canal, Belfast turned its back on the river. However, we can also be proud of the work undertaken in recent decades to enhance the riverside landscape, improve water quality, attract wildlife and reconnect the Lagan with the city.
